RESILIENT CITIZEN

ABOUT ROSTOCK

Nestled on the Baltic coast in northeastern Germany, Rostock boasts a rich maritime history and a vibrant present. As the largest city in the county of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, it holds significant weight in the Baltic Sea region. With a population of around 210,000, Rostock offers a charming blend of historical landmarks and modern attractions.

Visitors flock to explore the city’s well-preserved old town, with its Gothic churches like St. Mary’s and its bustling harbour. Rostock is an important port city for the German industry and tourist area. Ferries, cargo ships and cruise-liners are the merchant and passenger vessels found in the harbour today.

Rostock’s status as a former Hanseatic League city adds another layer of historical intrigue, while the annual Hanse Sail festival draws crowds eager to witness a spectacular gathering of traditional sailing ships. Beyond its maritime significance, Rostock is also a renowned center of learning.  The University of Rostock, founded in 1419, is the oldest university in all of continental northern Europe.  This prestigious institution, along with the Rostock University of Music and Drama, attracts students from across the globe, further solidifying Rostock’s reputation as a cultural and intellectual hub.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Effective population protection hinges on collaboration with the public. Residents need to be aware of their self-help responsibilities and the services offered by disaster response authorities in crisis situations. To achieve this, a long-term, multimedia communication strategy with targeted use of both analog and digital media is crucial. This strategy should effectively convey necessary knowledge and ensure long-term retention.

The German nationwide warning day serves as a successful example of such a project within civil protection. This recurring event utilizes both analogue and digital public relations activities to continuously strengthen residents‘ situational awareness. The entire process leverages various digital tools.

Save-the-date to participate at the closing event of the “Connecting resilient Cities” project and visit the City of Rostock from 10th to 12th of September 2025.
